Call Rep. King
Rep. King - LI Office: (516) 541-4225
Rep. King - DC Office: (202) 225-7896
> Why haven’t you condemned the murders carried out by white supremacist, Jeremy Joseph Christian, a man with a public record of “extremist ideology,” according to the Portland Police?
> You have said that, “The threat to this country is not Islamophobia, it’s Islamist terrorism,” and you have called Islamophobia “nonsense.” According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), there has been a nearly 600% increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes in the past three years. Clearly, you choose to ignore this.
> Would you speak out and condemn the murders or praise the heroes had they been killed trying to protect two white women?; Had they been killed by an undocumented immigrant or a “radical Islamic terrorist?” Why are you silent now?
> Ricky Best, a veteran and father of four, and Taliesin Namkai-Meche, a recent college graduate, were murdered by white supremacist, Jeremy Joseph Chistian, because they tried to intervene when Christian started yelling what "would best be characterized as hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions" toward two Muslim teenagers. One of the teens said he “told us to go back to Saudi Arabia and he told us we shouldn’t be here, to get out of his country.”
> A third man, Micah David-Cole Fletcher was also stabbed, but survived the attack.
> The stabbings happened hours before the start of Ramadan, a month long Muslim holy period of prayer, fasting and charity.
> It took Trump three days and a public outcry to condemn these attacks.
> Reports of anti-Muslim harassment and hate crimes spiked immediately after the election, and the number of anti-Muslim hate groups has nearly tripled from 2015 to 2016 according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
> King supported the Muslim Ban, claiming that it wasn’t in fact a “Muslim Ban.” When NY02 Dems founder, Liuba Grechen Shirley, reminded him that the Ban prioritized Christian refugees over Muslim refugees, he responded, “if you know that a person is a Christian, you can assume they’re not an Islamic terrorist. If a Jew is coming from Nazi Germany, you can assume they were not Nazis.”
> King has also urged Trump to create a federal Muslim surveillance program. Both King's and Trump's rhetoric has fueled hate crimes, and allowed extremists to feel they have a voice in Congress and in the White House.
> Please call on King to immediately and emphatically condemn this hate crime!
