Our Story

WHO IS NY02 Dems?

New York’s 2nd District Democrats (NY02 Dems) is a constituent-based group dedicated to reenergizing the Democratic base, mobilizing district two residents, flipping our district, and ensuring that President Trump’s election is the spark that ignites the strongest, most unified social justice movement our country has ever seen.

We organize face-to-face lobbying, protests, rallies, phone calls, social media campaigns, voter registration, policy discussions, and other forms of community engagement.

Note from NY02 Dems Founder

In January, two weeks before Donald Trump’s inauguration, I started a group, called New York’s 2nd District Democrats, and started to post Action Alerts – simple things we could do to help resist Donald Trump’s agenda.

I was outraged that our Congressman Peter King had become the poster child for Trump’s presidency. Many constituents had been requesting meetings with Rep. King, but had no luck. He refuses to schedule constituent meetings or hold a Town Hall. He has also been deleting dissenting comments from his Facebook page, and blocking constituents.

Two weeks after I started the group, I listened as Rudy Giuliani announced that Rep. Peter King helped draft President Trump’s Executive Order, banning refugees and citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, and I reached out to other local groups to organize a joint protest in front of King’s office.

I called King’s office to request a meeting before the rally began, and was told that staff would try to meet with me and a few other members that afternoon. When we arrived, the office was locked. I called the district office, and was transferred to the Washington, D.C. office, who told me that the police insisted the NY office lock its doors. Hundreds marched, and Rep. King agreed to sit down with me and three other members on February 21

After our meeting, King told WCBS 880 he personally met with leaders of “protest groups.” I called his office to explain that I was in fact a “concerned taxpaying constituent,” not a “leader of a protest group.”

Since January, we have grown to more than 2,300 members. We have organized protests, joined forces with groups working across LI to resist Trump's agenda. We have held press conferences in front of King's office to call him out on his actions and rhetoric. King supports the ICE raids that are tearing families apart in our district. He's against a woman's right to choose even in the case of rape or incest. He's voted to allow coal companies to dump waste into our streams. As a parent this infuriates me.

Rep. King voted for a bill that would have left more than 74,000 people in our district without health insurance, and would have cut $14.6 million in funding from three hospitals in our district – Good Samaritan, Southside, and St. Joseph.

He supported President Trump’s decision to leave the Paris Agreement, ignoring the thousands of Long Islanders who lost their homes during Super Storm Sandy. We live on an island, and climate change, rising sea levels, and water quality affect our livelihoods.

While one of our goals is to hold Rep. King accountable and flip NY02, we are also working to elect progressive Democrats at all levels of government. We want to help build a Democratic bench, and engage voters year round in issues that matter to them – not just during election season. NY02 Dems works to strengthen our party, grow our ranks, and energize the Democratic base.

We look forward to working with you!

Thank you,
